What personal data we collect and why we collect it

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to assist with spam detection.


An anonymized string created from your email address (hash) may be provided to Gravatar to check if you use the service. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available here: Privacy Policy – Automattic. After your comment is approved, your profile picture will be visible to the public with your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract location data from images on the site.

Cookies

  • Comment cookies: If you leave a comment, you may opt to save your name, email, and website in cookies for convenience. These cookies last for 1 year.
  • Login cookies: When visiting the login page, a temporary cookie checks if your browser accepts cookies (no personal data, discarded on browser close).
  • Login session cookies: When logging in, cookies save login info and screen display choices. Login cookies last 2 days; screen options cookies last 1 year. Selecting “Remember Me” keeps your login for 2 weeks (cookies removed on logout).
  • Edit cookie: If you edit or publish an article, a cookie with the post ID is saved (no personal data, expires in 1 day).

Articles may include embedded content (videos, images, etc.). Embedded content from other sites acts as if you visited the external site, which may collect data, use cookies, and track interactions (including if you’re logged into an account on that site).

Analytics

  • Comments: Comments and metadata are retained indefinitely to auto-approve follow-up comments.
  • Registered users: Personal data provided in user profiles is stored. Users can view, edit, or delete their info (except usernames); administrators can also access and edit this data.
